HOW TO PROTECT YOUR PRINT HEAD

Posted on May 19, 2015 by Grace

If your
sublimation printer is suffering from inconsistent or downright terrible print quality, this could indicate a dirty print head. Maintaining your print head is essential to the life of your printer, otherwise, your replacement costs will increase while your productivity decreases and everything stops for repairs.

Trusted manufacturers provide a maintenance manual for each of their printer models. These manuals cover all of the basics regarding cleaning intervals, methods, products and supplies. If you follow these guidelines, and you are still unsatisfied with your print quality, it may be time to take a look at what you are putting into your printer. Using the wrong paper or roller can be as bad as damaging the print head with a wire brush.

Here are some other factors that can cause a print head to fail:

Abrasion
Abrasion happens whenever things rub against each other. Like
sublimation paper has been tight, the sublimation paper have poor quality, the roll sublimation paper have not install, the image fill full dark etc.

Paper Dust
Paper dust on the
platen (the roller that moves the paper through the printer), or paper dust on the roll to roll heat press machine, it can grind into the print head

Pressure
If you have an adjustable pressure setting, setting it too high can mean higher friction.

Contamination
Low quality or poorly treated labels could have been exposed to abrasive contaminants that will scrape and cut across the print head. Also, check where the printer is being used and whether there are contaminants in the workplace environment.

Corrosion
Corrosion can be caused by corrosive media such as labels that are treated with poor quality
sublimation ink, human skin oils or the wrong cleaning solutions.

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
ESD is a discharge of static electricity from improper handling of the print head assembly or static build-up on the ribbon/label from insecure wiring that may fry the print head.

Moisture
A humid or damp environment can create moisture that will damage a printhead.

Residue Buildup
If ribbon coating or direct thermal media coating builds up, it will interfere with heat transfer and possibly lead to overheating and burnout. This could be the result of improper cleaning, or, if it happens swiftly, the ribbon and label are most likely incompatible with each other.

If you followed a recommended maintenance schedule and your printhead has still prematurely worn out, consider whether the label and/or ribbons you use are known to be compatible with your printer. Ask yourself if the quality is the best it can be, then consider the wide range of printers that are compatible with Smith Corona labels. (These include Datamax, Intermec, Sato, and Zebra). Let Smith Corona provide you with the product that fits your printer.

We ensure that our labels DO NOT cause early wear. We use only high quality media to create our products. That means no corrosive chemicals, and no rough, or dusty paper.
